Portfolio Grading Rubric
The portfolio project is worth 18% of each student’s final course grade.
10 pts - PORTFOLIO PROJECT OUTLINE (due 5:00 PM, September 23, 2008)
2 pts | Document is submitted by 5:00 PM, September 23, 2007 |
2 pts | Identifies main theme |
1 pt | Identifies activities and point values so that portfolio comprises 10 units |
1 pt | Identifies “off the couch” (OTC) activity(ies) |
2 pts | Is clearly written and is less than one typed page |
1 pt | Proposes a news thread topic |
If proposal is submitted more than one week late, no credit will be awarded.
15 pts - SHORT PORTFOLIO WRTE-UP due as homework for your discussion section the week of September 30, 2008
1 pt | You have completed at least one activity for
your portfolio |
5 pts | You describe the activity(ies) you have completed |
2 pt | Is clearly written and is less than one typed page |
4 pt | Contains at least one relevant diagram and one relevant picture |
2 pt | You explain how the activities fit into the overall theme of your portfolio |
1 pt | You discuss your future plans for completing your portfolio |
35 pts - FINAL PRESENTATION to your section the week of November 18, 2008
3 pts | You submit slides 24 hours before the start of your section To guarantee a time slot in which to present your work, you MUST submit your presentation slides more than 12 hours before the start of your section. |
2 pts | Title slide contains descriptive presentation title, the date of the presentation, and your name |
2 pts | Additional slides contain relevant illustrations that help the audience to better understand your portfolio theme and activities you undertook |
2 pts | Additional slides contain descriptive text that is easily readable from the back of the room |
4 pts | You describe all activity(ies) that you have completed or will complete as part of your portfolio project |
5 pts | You describe in detail your favorite activity and/or the activity from which you learned the most |
4 pts | You speak clearly and at a sufficient volume so that all in the audience can hear what you have to say |
3 pts | You provide good answers to questions from the audience |
5 pts | You have submitted at least four units of your portfolio before you give your presentation (one of the four units can be your news thread) |
45 pts - SYNTHESIS ESSAY (due as part of completed Portfolio at 11:59 PM, December 5, 2008)
21 pts | Essay describes each activity and how it is connected to the overall theme |
9 pts | Essay discusses why this theme is important to the concept of sustainability |
7 pts | Essay exhibits high overall quality (e.g., the essay is thoughtful, analytical, insightful, clear, and succinct) |
5 pts | Spelling and grammar are correct. |
3 pts | Essay is 750 words or fewer. |
15 pts - NEWS THREAD due as part of completed portfolio at 11:59 PM December 5, 2008; can be submitted as one of the four portfolio Units that are due at the time of your final presentation [see rubric above]).

90 pts - PORTFOLIO ACTIVITIES OF YOUR CHOICE
(All six are due as part of completed portfolio at 11:59 PM December
5, 2008; at least four portfolio Units are due at the time of your final presentation [see rubric above]).
Each “unit” of your portfolio project is equivalent to 15 points within the portfolio grading rubric. Because of the breadth of potential activities, the six “free choice” units of the portfolio project do not have a standardized grading rubric. For each of the units that you complete, your TA will assign credit based on the effort you put into the tasks and the insightfulness and quality of the associated essays.
