Open Street Map.org (OSM) is the source of vast amounts of
geographic data from a community of enthusiast. For many
parts of the world it can be an invaluable source of vector
data, but is in a native format (PBF) not directly importable
into ArcGIS. What to do?
- Find a service that provides OSM files in
shapefile or geodatabase format. Perhaps
the best for custom extraction of specific areas
is BBBike.org (http://extract.bbbike.org/).
Global coastline, land polygons and water
polygons can be found
here. Others sources can be found by
Googling "OSM data download" or something
similar.
- Download PBF data from
OSM
and convert it to geodatabase feature classes
using the ArcGIS
Editor for OSM toolbox.
