How to import Open Street Maps data

Open Street Map.org (OSM) is the source of vast amounts of geographic data from a community of enthusiast.  For many parts of the world it can be an invaluable source of vector data, but is in a native format (PBF) not directly importable into ArcGIS.  What to do?

  1. Find a service that provides OSM files in shapefile or geodatabase format.  Perhaps the best for custom extraction of specific areas is BBBike.org (http://extract.bbbike.org/).  Global coastline, land polygons and water polygons can be found here. Others sources can be found by Googling "OSM data download" or something similar.
  2. Download PBF data from OSM and convert it to geodatabase feature classes using the ArcGIS Editor for OSM toolbox.
